I recently read the book Brain on Fire and wrote a review about it on here. The newest book I read was Under My Helmet by Keith O’Neil. It is by a former NFL player and Super Bowl Champion that suffers and struggles with Bipolar Disorder.
This was an excellent read.
Sometimes, I feel like we think of athletes as invincible. In reality, they are just as human as the rest of us. They experience the trials and tribulations that life throws, too.
What I found so fascinating about this book is that playing on the same team as THE Peyton Manning, winning that aforementioned title and everything that came with O’Neil’s football career, was simply an aside to the point of the story – Bipolar.
I highly recommend this book to anyone, but especially those suffering from a mental illness or know someone who is. The perspective is outstanding and it truly takes a strong person, family, a team of doctors and support system to live a life with Bipolar.
