The Cavs made a trade right before the deadline that was relatively well-received by the fans here in Cleveland. The Pistons received Brandon Knight, John Henson and a second-round pick from the Cavaliers for Andre Drummond. The big man is averaging 17.8 PPG, 15.8 RPG and 2.8 APG. Those are some really great numbers…
What’s crazy, though?
Both PF Tristan Thompson and Kevin Love remain on the roster despite, before the deadline, a growing sense that at least one was going to be traded or bought out.
This puts head coach John Beilein is a bit of a conundrum. The Cavs have three very capable bigs in Drummond, Love and TT. However, there are only two spots in the frontcourt. None of those guys are capable of playing small forward or anything of that nature.
In a close game, if I had to choose, I’m picking Drummond and Love. TT is going to have to watch even though he really deserves to be out there and has played extremely well this season. This goes for the starting lineup, as well.
Tristan is an energy guy and his rebounding and activity will certainly be missed towards the end of games the Cavs actually have a chance to win (on those rare occasions). Don’t forget about Larry Nance Jr., a guy also having a great year within his role on this team.
Honestly, it’s going to be a lot of fun to watch Andre Drummond in a Cavaliers uniform. I just feel bad that a guy who has spent his entire career here in Cleveland and was a part of the 2016 Championship team, to get relegated back to the bench.
After this season, though, Thompson will get to choose who he wants to play for on his own. He’ll be an unrestricted free agent. It would be awesome if TT did stay in Cleveland, but we will have to wait and see on that front.
No one expected this trade and it does add a bit of pizzaz to a season that was extremely difficult to endure as a fan used to consistent playoff runs throughout recent history (Thanks, LeBron). However, with a 13-39 record. Well, it’s not like Drummond is going to help push this team to the playoffs this year…
To Tristan: I’ll say this as kindly as possible – Suck it up.
