2015 Cleveland Indians Top 10 Prospects

7. LHP Justus Sheffield

Sheffield is one of the more peculiar cases for an MLB pitching prospect. He stands at 5’10”, which is not your typical height for a workhorse starter, but who knows, at 18 years old he still might be growing. Considering his height, lefty-throwing arm and overall stuff, it seems like Sheffield is destined for a late-inning bullpen role, but there is still a lot of time and evaluation to be had before Sheffield reaches the big stage.

Sheffield, less than a year removed from high school, already has some eye-opening stuff. His best two pitches have to be his fastball that has maxed out at 94 MPH and a sharply-breaking curve that he normally throws in the upper 70’s. With some improvement in the Minors, Sheffield could be looking at a solid pitch arsenal in the next 3-4 years.

The 18-year-old had a fair debut in the Arizona Fall League, making 4 starts and 4 relief appearances. Sheffield finished with a 3-1 record, 4.79 ERA, 29 K, and 9 BB. Maybe the most encouraging stat, he allowed no home runs in nearly 21 innings pitched.
